Race Recovery & Being Thankful

recovery

I am happy to say last weekend’s 30K didn’t completely ruin me for the week. I was ready for DOMS to set in a couple of days later. Guess what? It didn’t. Sure my legs were a little tired but I wasn’t completely out of commission for the week. I owe this to my ice bath and recovery tricks. They work!

recoveryI joined Shannon for her 12K run on Saturday morning. (Then I ran an additional 13K on my own.) It’s always fun to run with Shannon. We both have the same kind of dark sense of humour. Good people. At first my legs felt slightly heavy but once we ran a few kilometres I found my happy pace. I knew I had to take it easy because my plan was to run 25K that day.

recoveryI haven’t run around Heritage Ranch in a long time so the change in scenery was welcoming. Lots of shiny, happy people were out and about walking, running or fishing. Nice weather definitely brings out all the people.

And it brought out the animals. We came across a fox den. Isn’t this little guy cute? Others (brothers or sisters or mom) were peeking their little heads out of the bushes to look at us. After we resumed running, we saw a red fox up the bath. No doubt they were cousins or something.

Once Shannon finished her run, I went into the washroom at Heritage Ranch to pee and to take off my jacket. It was so bloody hot! I won’t complain. I love the hot weather. I am crossing my fingers that it rains in Fort McMurray. I am at a loss to describe my feelings about the wildfires. It’s such a heart-wrenching situation and it’s been weighing heavy on me all week. I work in media so it’s my job to stay on top for local angles etc. I have interviewed displaced Fort McMurray residents and I have read accounts of those fleeing for their lives. You wouldn’t be human, if you were not affected by what’s happening to that community of 83,000. My heart breaks.

But today I was happy to just turn it all off and just run. My life is not perfect but I am very fortunate to be healthy, have a job and a place to sleep at night.

Peace.
