Run your age

Have you ever been told to run your age?

Last week I celebrated my birthday with a short hike up Prairie Mountain. Take a look at this video of our day on Facebook. I also wrote about running your age in mileage in my latest Running with Rhyno column in the Advocate. In it I write about how runners often celebrate milestones, in this case birthdays, with a run. It just makes sense. We love to run and why not mark a special occasion with time on the trail.

But time heals and gives adds perspective to any situation. The experience also solidified my belief to trust your first instincts. I am so happy that I actually made it out to the mountains. Sleeping in and being sidetracked by a roadside collision did not help my cause.

RUN AGE MILEAGE

Do you run your age on your birthday? So if you are 25, you would either run 25 kilometres or 25 miles. The kilometres will just fly by. As I mentioned in my column, winter birthday runners are at a disadvantage. We have to fight the frosty elements as well as our motivation. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate survival, life and ability to do the things I want.

Prairie was a tad bit windy on the top. It wouldn’t be the same if it weren’t windy. The only thing that was missing was the tea. We were pleasantly surprised of the lack of snow. I had my spikes in the trunk of my car but I didn’t really want to wear them unless I had too.

I’m looking forward to another year on this planet.

  1. I keep thinking I will run my age and then don’t. This year I opted for time for lunch and a beer before I had to head home. It’s just a number after all…

  3. I couldn’t run my age, I’m too old.

  4. Hey CR … like JP, I haven’t run my age lately. As in, since I was in my 20s. Nowadays, that would mean a leisurely 54-km jaunt.
    In February.
    In winter.
    In Ottawa.
However, maybe 54 k in a WEEK … or 54 k on the recumbent exercise bike in the basement with the tunes cranked up LOUD. Yeah, now we’re talking. Happy belated birthday.
