Best of Running with Rhyno in 2016

Goodbye yellow brick road …. er … goodbye 2016 and welcome 2017.

I started writing this post on Wednesday. It is now Monday, which means I had to scrap it and start over because it was not overly newsworthy. My plan was to write a few posts before the year’s end but stuff got in the way.

I hope you enjoyed the holiday season. The winter weather has finally calmed down (for now) in Alberta. For the last few days, the temperatures have just hovered below -6 C, which means perfect running weather. Today I am sharing you some of my running photos from 2016. You will see there is no snow in the photos because all my best runs are at other times of the year.

2016 reviewI had so many photos to choose from so I picked a few that were fun and colourful. My favourite out of this bunch is the one of Rachel and I in Lethbridge. We looked so fit and healthy. The one in the middle is in Gatineau Park in Quebec where I nearly killed my old friend Nick (who isn’t used to running with me). (On a side note, Nick if you are reading this, I hope you have kept up with your running since August.)

2016 in review

  • I ran three races  – Eyeball the Wall, Iron Legs and Lost Soul
  • I ran in Red Deer, Kananaskis, Canmore, Ottawa and Quebec
  • I ran with Rachel, Laura, Amanda, Shannon, Nick and Michelle
  • I didn’t train as hard as I should have
  • I took an hour off my previous Lost Soul time
  • I managed not to seriously hurt myself
  • I stretched and rolled more
  • I didn’t get to the mountains as I would have liked
  • I scaled back on running in September
  • I focused on finishing and not injuring myself

What’s ahead in 2017?

Good question. So far I have signed up for Iron Legs 60K. Last year I ran on a two-person team with Amanda and it nearly killed me. My right leg/hip gave me such a hard time on the downhills. I am going back in 2017 with a vengeance. I’m throwing an additional 20K in for fun. Rachel has also signed up so we can train together. Most likely I will sign up for Lost Soul again. I still have to take care of some business there.

I’d like to run a 50K in the U.S.  Any suggestions?

  1. I’m not an ultrarunner, so I don’t know, but my friend Kristina, who I ran Big Sur with, is running Bryce Canyon in Utah. I think they have all different distances.

    Happy New Year!
