Week #5 Training

Weight gain, sleepless nights and sluggish metabolism.

Happy first day of spring.

Snow is melting and puddles are everywhere. Love this time of year. Enough of cold, snowy winter days. Enough of leaving for work in the dark and coming home in the dark. Bring on the sunshine. This winter has been tough on me. Although it was tough getting out of bed for the first few days since Daylight Saving time, I am thrilled to be able to go home in light. I look forward and not dread going back outside for my runs.

I am set to begin the fifth week of my training plan. I’ve been loosely following it over the last two weeks. Another cold spell and snow got in the way of my carefully laid out plans. Still I see the light at the end of the snowy tunnel. I didn’t get vexed or depressed. I did what I could when I could. Sometimes I have to remind myself that stuff happens and nobody is perfect. (Despite what his or her Instagram or Twitter feed suggests.) We can have bad days, weeks or even months. It’s how you respond to the hiccup that will lead you to the tunnel.

There were so many people out on Sunday morning along the trails. Over the last few months, I have been running at all hours of the day. I try to run during the warmest part of the day. Generally that means I don’t run until at least 1 p.m. in the afternoon. I remembered how great it feels to run in the morning on the morning. I had my whole day ahead of me. Getting my run over with in the morning definitely put a spring in my step.

I’ve put on about eight pounds this winter. That’s huge for me. I can’t remember the last time I weighed this much. It must have been when I lived in Grande Prairie. Less activity + not paying attention to what I eat + mindless snacking = weight gain. All my pants are tight. It’s embarrassing really. Thank goodness for big sweaters. Ha! I am crossing my fingers this weight gain won’t be permanent. Of course it won’t be if I find my willpower and move my butt! I will let you know how it’s going in a couple weeks.

Sleepless nights

I wanted to give you an update on my sleeping patterns. I’m sleeping more these days. It helps that I am actually making the effort to turn off the lights early. As a result, I am feeling more energized and ready to take on the day.

That’s it for my training update. Thank you for dropping by.

  1. I have no doubt that better running weather will melt those pounds off! I was kind of in the same boat, right after Xmas and all the extra trail-running has made a huge difference—ran MUCH more this winter than any in the past.
You might be on to something with the sleep pattern and turning the lights off earlier. We have a former co-worker who had a baby a year ago and the baby just would not sleep! Our friend went through a year of this and got so desperate that they called in a sleep therapist for the baby. He suggested putting the baby to bed MUCH earlier than you might normally think, suggested 5:30ish. And it worked! The kid started sleeping through the night after that! So good luck!
