Watch: New-to-me trails in Woodlea

I found new-to-me trails. 

Behind Woodlea’s neighbourhood playground and sliding hill is a patch of woods with some pretty wicked hills. Word has it the hills are part of an old ski hill in Red Deer. I’m not sure of the details. But Amanda has been chatting about this area for a few weeks now. I didn’t give it too much thought because quite frankly I had no idea what she walking about. I had no idea where to find Woodlea.

Now I know. It’s roughly 2.7 km away from my place. 

Today I ran some hill loop repeats in the morning. Last night Amanda and I explored the short trails when I got back from the vegan festival in Calgary. I had gone with Mark and Karin. I didn’t pass up the chance to ask Mark if he knew about the hills. Of course he did! He gave me directions and off I went last night. 

Find this sign. Then you know you’re in the right spot.

Please forgive me if you already know about this trail. I just get so excited when I find a new-to-me trail that I want to share with everyone! I just wished I had paid more attention sooner. I could have been running here all summer. I feel so silly because it’s so close and I had no idea. (In my defence, I also had no idea this area was called Woodlea.) 

These short hills are perfect for practicing your downhills.

So here is my news … yes I’m burying my lead. Next weekend I am running Bill’s Trail Run in Lacombe. I signed up for the 10-miler. As it turns out, it will likely be my only race this year. I haven’t run a short distance race in several years. I am not exactly sure how this will turn out. I ran this race two years ago. It may have been my last “short” distance. 

I am excited to run on the Lacombe trails. It’s been way too long since I used to meet Dianne every Sunday to run the trails. I need to start running there again. Funny enough I am now part of the club since I joined in order to get one of their cool hats. (I will do just about anything for a cool hat.) Maybe one day I will make it out for their Saturday morning runs. 

Thanks to those who asked how I am doing – I am doing great. My right leg is virtually pain-free, and the iron pills seem to be kicking in. Crazy how things work out when you just slow down.
