Watch: From the sidelines: First Responders Half

As I am freezing my buff at the finish line, a young woman says to me “I don’t know how these runners do it. I can barely run 500 metres let alone in this cold.”

Yeah me too, I muttered and avoided eye contact.

It’s Sunday and I am waiting for Laura to finish the First Responders Half Marathon in Calgary. It’s been a long time since I hung out at a road race. For one brief moment, I thought … I should be running. Then I caught myself – no way in heck. Cold freezing toes and fingers aside, it was quite fun.

Watching the runners cross the finish line.

It was quite fun because I sat in my car, and read a book while I waited for Jon and Laura to finish. Call me a wimp or lazy. I am perfectly fine with that. I was happy to cheer and support the runners. I’m eyeing a couple winter runs later but I am not ready for one right now.

As you know, I been coaching Jon for my coaching certification over the last 10 weeks. Sunday was his final race. He had also run Bill’s Trail Run in the fall. He had a really great run and finished in a good time for him. I am super impressed with his dedication. We have a few more weeks of training together but the Calgary run was the big hoorah.

Way to go Laura and what a sweet medal!

Laura, who is such a determined runner, had a great run too. I don’t think I could run 21K on the road without some serious aches the next day. After the run, Laura and I headed to The Coup for lunch before spending some quality time at MEC.

Great day for all! It was fun hanging out with Laura and getting caught up on everything. I was super happy for Jon too. It’s wonderful when to set a goal and smash it.

How was your weekend? Did you smash any goals?
