Why I cut my cable to be a better runner

Times are busy.

In my world of go, go, go, when I am finished rushing from one thing to another, I like to tune out. Sometimes I find myself in front of the television watching mindless shows. (I purchased a TV last year after not owning one for about three years. I tend to go in spurts where I am off television then I am back on.)

I know it’s a terrible habit. I could be doing something more productive or healthy like – yoga or reading.

I love this photo.

I was recently thinking on my schedule – trying to find more hours in my 24-hour day. I have so much that I want to do and I never seem to have enough time. I had to be wasting time somewhere. I found I was spending a couple of hours a night in front of the tv (or it was playing in the background). While I wasn’t fully engaged with what was on the big screen, the television still had some of my attention. And it was distracting.

When I didn’t have the TV blaring in the background, I get more done at home and I go to bed earlier. I decided right on the spot I would downgrade my cable to basic (a $22 savings) and I would only watch once or twice a week. So far, so good.

By cutting my cable, I am cutting free of another distraction. I can focus more on my goals. Next year I am channelling all the positive energy from the world in order to have a great running season. This year was incredibly disappointing.

UPDATE ON RUNNING STREAK/MILEAGE GOAL

I am still streaking. Two days this week, I ran the bare minimum to give my body some rest. I should have no problem finishing – halfway there! I should also reach my second week running 70K. (I say should because tomorrow I need to run 12K.) I expect to follow through on this goal too (as long as it doesn’t drop to -30C in the next two weeks).

Running on the treadmill is still taking some time to get used to. My body does not want to run at 5:30 a.m. and I need about 10 to 15 minutes to finally warm up. I am only fully warmed up at the one-hour mark when it’s time to get off the treadmill. I am sure in time I will get used to the darn machine.

I love this December weather

Yes I am also following through on my goal to train before I go to work. I was lucky to get in a run during the day last week. I still haven’t brought myself to running outside before the sun rises. My neighbourhood can be sketchy and there are few streetlights. I’m close to the trails but it’s dark as heck and the trails aren’t exactly clear. I have visions of falling down on the ice and breaking something.

Although the treadmill is boring at least I have no risk of slipping on dark ice or tripping over my own feet. There really are no excuses when you can roll out of bed and jump on the treadmill.

About time City of Red Deer

I joined Goodlife Fitness to gain back some of my strength. I feel like I have lost it all since I stopped going to Crossfit and Bikram hot yoga. I really miss Crossfit but I simply cannot justify the cost and the classes do not work with my schedule. Last week I met briefly with one of the personal trainers at Goodlifeto discuss my goals. He also weighed me and checked my body fat percentage. I am over feeling embarrassed about my weight so I jumped at the opportunity to learn about my body composition. Next week I will have a proper assessment.

Right that’s it for me today!

Hope you’re having a wonderful Saturday. Let me know what you are up to in the comments below.
